What is TIMSS?
The Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) was the largest and most thorough international study of mathematics and science education ever conducted. The study was conducted in the spring of 1995.
Who participated ?
Several countries participated in surveys of school practices and conducted student testing at grades 4, 8, and the final year of secondary school (grade 12 in most countries). SciMathMN sponsored Minnesota's participation as a "mini-nation" at all three grade levels. This made it possible to compare Minnesota's results with the United States and the other participating countries.
International comparisons are essential to a full understanding of our current education system and gives us the information we need to implement standards-based changes in teaching and learning.
What did we learn?
SciMathMN believes TIMSS provides important information about the strengths and weaknesses of science and mathematics education in the United States. The results, used in conjunction with other information about teaching and learning, can help us improve. TIMSS affirms our commitment to standards-based, system-wide improvements in Minnesota schools, as guided by the national mathematics and science education standards and reinforced in the Minnesota Academic Standards.
